New Zealand Certificate in Electrotechnology (Level 3)
This course is for learners wanting to enter the electrotechnology industry as either an installer or an Electrical Appliance Serviceperson.
On completion the learners will be able to install and maintain networks and systems or service and repair a diverse range of end-user appliances, goods and/or equipment at a non-complex level.
There are 2 programmes to choose from and 2 strand options for each programme:
- the Electrotechnology programme, with an Installation or Service strand
- the Electronic Security programme, with an Installation or Service strand

This course is for anyone entering the electrotechnology industry as either an installer or a serviceperson and is an intermediate step to the Level 4 Customer Premises Systems qualification (with strands in: Structured Cabling, Control and Automation, Signal Reception and Distribution Systems or System Installation for Relocatable and/or Mobile Locations).
On completion learners will be able to install and maintain radio & data networks and systems or services and repair a range of user equipment at a non-complex level into fixed and mobile installations.
Learners who enrol in the Installation strand will be able to:
- Undertake the installation, maintenance, restoration, scoping and connectivity of efficient, reliable, and secure data and communication systems and hardware.
- Operate as technicians at intermediate level under indirect supervision.
Learners who enrol in the Service strand will be able to:
- Diagnose, repair and service a diverse range of equipment at a non-complex level and supervise electrical workers.
- They will also be able to undertake the EWRB examination to allow them to service mains powered equipment.

This course is for learners wanting to enter the electrotechnology industry as either an installer or an Electrical Appliance Serviceperson.
On completion learners will be able to install and maintain networks and systems or service and repair a diverse range of end-user appliances, goods and/or equipment at a non-complex level.
Learners who enrol in the Installation strand will be able to:
- Undertake the installation, maintenance, restoration, scoping and connectivity of efficient, reliable, and secure data and communication systems and hardware.
- Maintain and repair a diverse range of extra low voltage electronic systems or equipment at a non-complex level.
- Operate as technicians at intermediate level under indirect supervision.
Learners who enrol in the Service strand will be able to:
- Diagnose, repair and service a diverse range of equipment at a non-complex level and supervise electrical workers.
- They will also be able to undertake the EWRB examination to allow them to service mains powered equipment
Course outline if you are wanting to join, or are part of the Security Industry
This course is for learners wanting to enter the electronic security industry as either an installer or a serviceperson and is an intermediate step towards the level 4 New Zealand Certificate in Electronic Security.
On completion learners will be able to install and maintain data networks and security systems or service and repair security, access control & surveillance equipment & systems at a non-complex level.
Learners who enrol in the Installation strand will be able to:
- Undertake the installation, maintenance, restoration, scoping and connectivity of efficient, reliable, and secure security, access control & surveillance systems and hardware.
- Operate as technicians at intermediate level under indirect supervision.
Learners who enrol in the Service strand will be able to:
- Diagnose, repair and service security systems and equipment at a non-complex level and supervise electrical workers.
- They will also be able to undertake the EWRB EASQ examination.
Outcome of Course
Graduates of the Installation strand will be awarded the New Zealand Certificate in Electrotechnology (Level 3).
Graduates of the Installation strand (security programme) will be awarded the New Zealand Certificate in Electrotechnology (Level 3) and will hold the required training and skills to seek a COA, or licence from the Private Security Personnel Licensing Authority.
Graduates of the Service strand will be awarded the New Zealand Certificate in Electrotechnology (Level 3) and will be eligible to seek registration and licensing as an Electrical Appliance Serviceperson (endorsed to disconnect and connect) (EAS endorsed).
Once you have successfully obtained your New Zealand Certificate in Electrotechnology (Level 3) there are many career pathways you can take:
- NZC in Customer Premises Systems Level 4
- NZC Electrical Engineering (Electrical and Electronic Installation and Servicing) Level 4
- NZC Electronic Engineering Level 4
- NZC Electronic Security Level 4
Prerequisite Requirements
Applicants must hold a NZ residency, permanent residency, or citizenship.
They must also hold NCEA Level 1:
- 10 credits in Mathematics; and
- 10 credits in English; and
- 14 credits in General Science or Physics
Or equivalent Outcome of Course or experience.
English Language entry requirement: Applicants must have sufficient competence in the English language to undertake this programme which is taught and assessed in English. This will be demonstrated by meeting the current NZQA requirements.

Students aged 20+ years who do not hold the minimum entry requirements for a programme will be eligible to enrol as a student where their previous educational, work or life experience indicate that they have a reasonable likelihood of success. Students under the age of 20 who do not hold the required minimum entry requirements for a programme may also be eligible to enrol in exceptional circumstances. Such decisions will be made by the Director/Head of School.
Course Structure
You must be working in the industry:
Part-Time: 18 months
Blended Learning: This course is made up of both online theory learning and practical’s, there are 11 modules in total. Learner will use naturally occurring evidence from the workplace (i.e. job cards, service report) verified by the supervisor or manager
Intakes: Enrolments occur on monthly basis from February through to November
Course Costs
$51.90 GST inclusive per week.
Fees Free
The Government has announced that Fees Free for the first year of study or training will finish at the end of 2024. A final-year Fees Free policy will replace it, starting from 1 January 2025.
If you are a first-time tertiary learner in 2025, you may be able to get Fees Free for your final year of study or training. If you are eligible, you will need to apply for your entitlement through IRD from 2026 onwards.

Examination
This course does not include an examination for installation strands; however, Service strand learners will undertake EWRB examinations as part of the overall programme.
